On average, slightly more than one in four people in England have a long-term condition. For Bromley, that equates to approximately 80,000 people. Many people have more than one condition. These are health problems that generally last longer than a year, impact on your life, and may mean you require on-going care and support.

Usually long-term conditions cannot be cured, but with regular treatment and medication can be kept in check. It can be anything from diabetes or asthma to high blood pressure, depression, arthritis and many other conditions.

Living with a long-term health condition involves much more than just medical management. Learning how to self-manage your condition can have a very positive impact on your life. Self-management is about balance and long-term behavioural change. It is about finding ways to live a fulfilling life and not letting your condition take over.

People who have taken a self-management course say:

"The self-management course has empowered me and given me plenty of information about controlling my diabetes. I enjoyed the social aspect of it and made a lot of new friends. I'm more positive now and my energy levels have gone up tremendously."  Armit (diabetes).

"Being on the self-management programme has helped me restart my life. My condition was isolating and unpredictable so I was stuck inside four walls. The course helped me to relax and taught me how to communicate with family, friends and doctors. I feel more confident now about living with my condition." Patricia (neurological condition).

If you have a long-term condition and live in Bromley, or know someone who does, take advantage our self-management course. It could be the first step towards changing your life for the better. Call Self Management UK on call 03333 445 840 or emailhello@selfmanagementuk.org.
