A major milestone has been reached on the development of the new Orpington Health and Wellbeing Centre. The commercial agreement has been finalised and agreed which includes all the different leases for the parties moving in. This is a significant development in this ambitious project and great news for Orpington residents who will benefit from a range of community health services being delivered from high quality, modern and fit for purpose premises.
The Orpington Health and Wellbeing Centre is part of a wider programme being undertaken by NHS Bromley Clinical Commissioning Group to improve health services across Bromley. The centre will house two GP surgeries (Knoll Medical Practice and one other, to be confirmed), and a range of primary, secondary and community health and wellbeing services, including out-patients, x-ray and ultrasound, all under one roof, in an excellent and accessible location.
The new site is owned by Berkeley Homes, who purchased the former Orpington Police Station site in Orpington Town centre in 2015. Planning permission was granted for a new residential development which would include a health and wellbeing centre on the ground and first floors. A business case was developed which was approved by NHS England and the CCG’s Governing Body. Patients and other stakeholders have been instrumental in the development of plans for the new centre which is scheduled to open for business in the next couple of years.
Dr Angela Bhan, Chief Officer of NHS Bromley Clinical Commissioning Group said, “We are delighted to have reached this key milestone in our plans for the Orpington Health and Wellbeing Centre. It has been a detailed and complex process to agree firstly the business case for the building and then the commercial agreements. I am delighted that these are now agreed and that it hasn’t delayed the actual building of the new centre which is well underway. We are so committed in Bromley to providing our residents with accessible care which meets their needs and we are very excited to see the new centre take shape. Once it is opened we can provide a range of community based services for Orpington people much closer to home and avoid them having to go to hospital for some of their treatment”.
Peter Smith, Managing Director, Berkeley Homes Eastern Counties, said
“This represents a significant milestone for the rejuvenation of Orpington’s new town centre. Securing such an innovative community facility for this central 2,265 sqm site is testament to the vision and commitment of all involved. It will provide superb purpose-built new health amenities for both new and existing residents of Orpington and complement the wider new additions to the town centre, which include a cinema, hotel, gym and restaurants.
“It is an exciting year for this Zone 6 location. Alongside the new Health and Wellbeing Centre, the introduction of new retailers and amenities to the area, 2017 will also see the completion of the first homes at our Brunswick Square development, by the new public square.”
NHS Property Services will take responsibility for the management of the new Health and Wellbeing Centre and will work with local partners to provide the interior fit-out of the centre.
Catherine Webster, Senior Construction Manager at NHS Property Services, said: “We are proud to deliver high quality construction projects that bring wide-ranging benefits for patients and our customers. We are delighted we are able to support this development and help create a modern and welcoming health environment for the Orpington community.”
