New Perinatal Mental Health Service to be provided for Bromley women

Date: 05 June 2015

Time: 01:00

The CCG is investing in a new specialist community perinatal mental health service for women in Bromley.  This decision was made at the CCG Governing Body meeting on 21 May 2015.  This service will work with existing mental health and maternity services to provide high quality specialist mental health support to women and their families during pregnancy and the perinatal period.

The investment for the new service is around £270k per annum which is in line with national and local clinical recommendations.

Women in Bromley requiring perinatal mental health support currently have access to mainstream services such as GPs, midwives, health visiting, IAPT and secondary care mental health services.  The new service would enable  an integrated care pathway with maternity and health visiting services so that comprehensive, co-ordinated care for women with additional mental health needs is provided in a timely manner.   The specialist team would work closely with GPs and maternity services during pregnancy and with health visiting services for post natal care, providing joint clinics for those women requiring high levels of support, care coordination for those considered to be at highest risk and medicines management advice for those on psychiatric medications.   The benefits of the service are wide ranging for both women and their families.  In particular for women with a history of significant mental ill health who are considered to be at risk of relapse or recurrence of their illness associated with pregnancy and the postnatal period and those women who become acutely unwell during pregnancy or the postnatal period.

We are now in the implementation phase and anticipate the new service being operational during this financial year 2015/2016.
